Sciatica Treatment

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the name for the pain that develops in the lower back, buttocks, and legs when the sciatic nerve is compressed. Sciatica is not a condition by itself, but a symptom of other conditions that compress the sciatic nerve in the lumbar spine. Sciatic pain is typically described as stabbing or shooting and usually affects the lower back and buttocks. Sciatica is usually only experienced on one side of the body, although it is possible that you may experience pain on both sides. For example, it can cause pains to shoot down one or both legs and can sometimes cause a numb or tingling sensation in the legs. This can make it difficult to stand and if left untreated may lead to mobility issues and disability.

What causes sciatica?

A number of different conditions and injuries can lead to the compression of the sciatic nerve including, but not limited to:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis in the lumbar spine (lower back)
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Muscle spasm
  • Pregnancy

There are other factors that contribute to the development of sciatica. For example, being overweight or obese can lead to compression in the lower spine. Sleeping on an unsupportive mattress can also lead to spinal misalignment and sciatica. Even wearing high-heeled shoes can cause misalignment in your spine and lead to sciatic pain.

When should I make an appointment with Dr. Kielur for sciatica?

If you are experiencing pain in your lower back, buttocks, hips, or legs, you should make an appointment for diagnosis and treatment with Dr. Kielur. Dr. Kielur believes that it isn’t necessary to just accept even minor pain or discomfort as part of getting older.

It is especially important to seek advice and help from an experienced provider like Dr. Kielur if your pain doesn’t subside on its own after a couple of days of rest, or if you experience numbness or a loss of strength in your legs.

How does Dr. Kielur treat sciatica?

After a comprehensive diagnostic exam, Dr. Kielur will provide you with an effective and customized treatment plan to not only relieve your sciatic pain but also to correct and heal the condition causing the pain. Dr. Kielur uses DRS Protocols™, which is a combination of treatments including adjustments, spinal decompression and more that will correct any alignment issues and create space between the vertebrae so that oxygen, water, and essential nutrients can reach the discs, which support, cushion and strengthen the spine.
