Facet syndrome is the name for pain at the joint between 2 vertebrae. Facets are the bony protrusions on the back of the vertebrae that help to align the spine and support flexibility between them. The facet joints actually join the vertebrae together and are designed to provide strength and flexibility in the spine.
When these facets break down or are injured, they can compress and irritate the soft gel spinal discs. This irritation, in turn, compresses and irritates the nerves traveling through and from the spine which causes pain and numbness both at the compression site and radiant pain along their nerve pathway.
Facet syndrome causes back pain, radiant pain and numbness in the arms and legs, as well as mobility issues in the spine. You may have difficulty in bending or twisting your spine. If facet syndrome affects your lower spine, you may have trouble getting out of a car or simply moving from a sitting to standing position.
Facet syndrome is usually linked to the degeneration of the spinal discs. Excessive pressure on the spine and injury can also contribute to the development of the condition. For example, a damaged or injured disc may wear down or collapse and not provide sufficient support for the vertebrae and they will get closer together. This may cause them to rub together during movement and without the cushioning shield of the disc, it creates an arthritic pain. This can also lead to the development of bone spurs and spinal stenosis.
Dr. Kielur uses DRS Protocols™ to treat and care for patients who experience facet syndrome without relying on drugs or spinal injections. DRS Protocols™ combine a variety of customizable chiropractic treatments such as chiropractic adjustments and decompression to create space between the vertebrae to encourage the intake of the water, oxygen, and nutrients necessary to rehydrate and restore the discs. By healing the spinal discs, the vertebrae are better supported and cushioned and the pain causing friction is reduced. DRS Protocols™ treatments create a negative pressure within the vertebra that acts like a vacuum encouraging damaged or herniated discs to return to their correct position.
